Vegvisir, also known as The Viking compass, is one of the most famous Icelandic magical staves or galdrastafir. The galdrastafir were supposedly used to channel magic in specific ways such as fertility, guidance through a storm, and protection in battle, guidance, and assistance with specific tasks or areas of life. Those effects would be different depending on their shape. In many cases, the symbols were made by combining the runes that made up the Old Norse alphabet. They were drawn onto specific areas of the body or physical objects, such as the side of boats or buildings Pronounced “VEGG-vee-seer”, means “That Which Shows the Way” so finally it means "the pointer of the way" and translates to "sign post" or "way finder".
